The pastrami is as good as anything you can find in New York City - just as good as Katz’s or Pastrami Queen, Ben’s Delicatessen, etc.
The bagels are reminiscent of Russ & Daughters or Kossar’s in the Lower East Side and I have no doubt that this is the closest you will get to a NYC bagel in Maine.
I am impressed.

I've been hearing about this place for years and hadn't been. But Mr Bagel was closed today, So I thought I would check them out. They only had rye bagels and previously frozen available, but the texture and mouth feel of the rye bagel - - out of this world. Best I've had in Portland so far. I ordered the traditional locks sandwich but with no dill and it was excellent. Unless generous portion of sliced locks then at some other places, including Mr Bagel, but an excellent sandwich nonetheless! Priced about the same as their competitors, I think. Service was friendly and helpful. I would definitely go back.
I had such high hopes for this place. Got tons of great reviews and looked like a nice spot. On first impression, this place seemed to up to the expectations but after waiting almost 30 min for two bagels with cream cheese to go, the experience became short of unacceptable. After waiting forever for my order, I opened up one of my bagels to find the bottom of my plain bagel unintentionally covered in chicken salad. My bagel was also garnished with some kind of hair as well. I guess we waited those 30+ minutes just for my bagel to be seasons with hair follicles and residual chicken meat. Tried to call the restaurant three times but got sent straight to voicemail to a voicemail box that was full. Do not waste your time here. All you’ll get is hairy dirty bagels.
Only one star because they have nice branding.
I recommend the L Train on rye then sitting by the bay to eat it but the food here is always delicious & the staff are friendly local folks. I just wish their coffee was stronger.

Beautiful space, lovely employees, delish food. I got the greengrass sandwich on an everything bagel and I’m still thinking about it. Went during the week in the early afternoon and there was no wait!
Roses was cozy and inviting with friendly service. The bagels had a satisfying crunch with a tender, chewy interior. The sesame bagel had a satisfying level of toasted sesame flavor. This is the perfect place to get a lovely breakfast that also offers a range of amusing products and cookbooks. I will absolutely make this a destination when I’m in Portland.
We got bagels for breakfast here. I took a risk and got an everything bagel with cream cheese, salmon caviar, dill, and onions. It was amazing. The feel of the salmon eggs being crushed to nothing between my teeth reminded me of how my ancestors must have felt eating tadpoles scooped out of the pond with their hands. 10/10 would order again
