This was not simply a tour of the coffee farm, but also an introduction to the history of coffee -- in general and in PR. After some coffee and banana bread (both from the farm), the very kind and friendly owner lead us through the beautiful grounds, showing both the coffee trees and their environment as well as the areas where they process the coffee. It was an excellent experience and well worth the drive down from San Juan (where we were staying).
Now, about the drive -- the owner will email directions when you make a reservation for the tour. Do NOT let google take you. Follow his directions. I repeat -- DO NOT TAKE THE ROAD GOOGLE SAYS! The "short cut" google will take you on is literally the craziest, steepest, windy-est "road" I have ever been on in my life. Hours later I am still shocked our rented corolla actually made it. Just follow his directions -- they are clear and safe.
Lovely talk given by a German expat who owns the farm with his very kind PR native wife. Together they've built a small coffee farm with additional fruit and exotic plants. Countless gorgeous photo opportunities to be had. For the price of $20/head we got a cup of black coffee, warm, fresh banana bread, all the sweet bananas straight off the vine we could handle and a cappuccino. We toured the farm and learned about the process, including the seasons and machinery. He even told us about the history of coffee growing in PR and his personal mistakes of building the farm along the way. Best of all, they were kid-friendly. The talk is really geared towards adults but all three of our small kids enjoyed the walking tour.
An exceptional example of small scale speciality coffee production. Spotless grounds with a wide variety of flowering vegetation. Comfortable and spotless accommodations. Very select coffee well worth a try. Somewhat inconvenient location but senic route.
